With technology being such a significant part of our lives nowadays, it’s important to be aware of the damage that can be caused by over-exposing ourselves to our technological devices – whether that is our computer screens, tablets or smartphones.

Damage Caused by Blue Light

Most of us rely on technology in our day-to-day lives.  Whether that is by using our cell phones to make a call, send a text, browse the Internet or find directions to our nearest café, there’s no denying that technology can be very helpful and positive. In fact, reports suggest that the average American spends over 10 hours a day looking at various screens.

However, it is important to be aware of the damage that can be caused when over-exposing ourselves to our screens, particularly due to the high frequency, short wavelength blue light (otherwise known as high-energy visible light or HEV) that is emitted.

As Dr. Gary Heitling, OD explains, visible blue light from our screens can damage the light-sensitive cells in our retina which can lead to a permanent loss of vision. However, that’s not all. Exposing ourselves to blue light can also negatively affect our sleep and according to dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman, it can also cause damage and premature aging in our skin.

Blue Light Can Damage Your Skin

Studies show that blue light may give off infrared radiation, which in turn causes damage to the skin by releasing cell-damaging free radicals that harm the DNA. This reduces the skin’s carotenoid (or antioxidant) levels and speeds up the aging process of the skin, causing hyperpigmentation and wrinkles to form.

How To Prevent Damage - Antioxidant

Giving up your tablet or cellphone altogether may not be an option these days. However, the good news is that there are other ways in which you can protect your skin from the light emitted from your screens, such as taking regular breaks from using your devices, tweaking your screen settings to decrease the blue light emitted, and regularly applying antioxidant skincare products to the skin.

Unfortunately, applying sunscreen to your skin is not an effective way of blocking out harmful blue light. Instead, antioxidant-rich formulas are a better alternative. Using products that are rich in antioxidants will help to protect your skin from the blue light emitted from your devices by preventing the free radical damage that can cause wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.

Types of Antioxidants

Powerful antioxidants that are used in skincare products include Vitamins A, C and E, Green Tea extract and Alpha-Hydroxy Acids such as Glycolic and Lactic Acids.  In addition to protecting the skin from the damage caused by free radicals, Vitamins A and C also help to boost collagen production thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

An easy way of incorporating antioxidants into your skincare routine is by choosing the right soap. Meiling Skincare’s natural soaps contain a high concentration of antioxidant-rich ingredients to help protect your skin from the damage caused by visible blue light emitted from screens, UV rays and other environmental toxins.
